Balestra: A Multifunctional Table for Modern Living Spaces

A Tribute to Italian Furniture Masters

The concept of the Balestra table, designed by Nikolay Vladykin, was inspired by the need for a multifunctional piece of furniture that would cater to contemporary functional needs, provide a higher level of comfort, and align with sustainable design trends. Drawing inspiration from Italian modernism, this table combines sleek lines, smooth curves, and an airy construction to exude elegance and expression.

What sets the Balestra table apart is its innovative approach to functionality. The table is designed to provide comprehensive rest for individuals while sitting on a sofa or armchair. Specially designed pads on the table allow users to relax and rest their legs, reducing the load on their cardiovascular and muscular systems, as well as their spine. This unique feature promotes comfort and well-being.

In addition to the leg rest function, the Balestra table offers an extra level of convenience. A small shelf within arm's reach provides a convenient spot to place essential items such as a smartphone, TV remote, or eyeglasses, eliminating the need to lean forward. This thoughtful design detail enhances the overall comfort and usability of the table.

The Balestra table is crafted using high-quality materials, including oak, tempered smoked glass, polished stainless steel, and alcantara. These materials not only contribute to the table's durability but also add a touch of sophistication to any living space. With dimensions of 1000mm*750mm*520mm and weighing 12kg, the table strikes the perfect balance between functionality and practicality.

Designed to seamlessly integrate into any living room or lounge area, the Balestra table requires no complex transformations or moving parts. It is simply installed with the rear leg positioned close to the sofa or armchair. Users can easily sit down, lean back, and rest their feet on the soft pads without any hassle. The tabletop provides easy access to items such as a glass of water, a book, or a TV remote, while the shelf underneath keeps other belongings within reach.

The Balestra table project, led by Nikolay Vladykin, commenced in June 2020 and was completed in December 2020 in Veliky Novgorod. The design process involved extensive research into the need for a functional and ergonomic structure that would also embody a midcentury modern aesthetic. Overcoming creative and technical challenges, Vladykin successfully created a design that not only fulfills multiple functions but also showcases a harmonious appearance.

Balestra is a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Italian furniture masters of the past. Its sustainable materials, midcentury modern style, and multifunctional design make it a standout piece in any living space. The table has received recognition for its excellence, winning the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This award acknowledges the table's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
